**The SPN 1000 is a custom made course for those residents in the community who require a cursory knowledge of Spanish to help them communicate with Spanish speaking people. Fundamentals of speaking, listening-comprehension, reading, writing, and Hispanic culture. Classroom practice and exercises supplemented by laboratory and/or multi-media designed to develop communicative competence and cultural sensitivity. Student expected to continue further implementation and expansion of their proficiencies in SPN 1121 and SPN 2220. Special fee charged.

This is Dr. Chávez first year teaching for Broward College.  She has had more than 20 years experience teaching at the university and college level.  She received her Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in Peninsular Spanish.  She has studied, lived and taken students to Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries for many years.  Dr. Chávez enjoys engaging students by using technology and using performance-based tasks in her language classes.

Dr. Klein received his Ph.D. from Princeton University. He has more than 15 years experience teaching Spanish and ESL at all levels. In addition to his training in Spanish, Dr. Klein also has a MA in Theater, so he uses performance techniques to teach language.  Dr. Klein has studied, lived and taken students to Spain and other Spanish-speaking countries. 

Methods of Instruction

The blended (hybrid) courses will be a combination of face-to-face instruction and online learning.  While in class I will provide you the support to practice the material you memorize at home.  I will use a communicative approach with performance-based activities so you are engaged in the lesson at home and on campus.

"This is a 4-credit hour course. Normally, a 4-credit hour course would meet two times each week (during a 16 week term) for a total of 4 hours per week or 64 hours per term. In this class, we will meet once a week for at least 3.5 hours, and you will engage in structured out-of-class or online activities for the remainder of the class time."
Assessments

Students are assessed with a variety of examinations and cultural projects which include the following:
1) Quizzes and examinations; Final Exam.

2) Dictation and active listening.

3) Individual and/or collaborative oral communication--presentation, interview, or recording.

4) Readings of increasing levels of difficulty, especially on topics dealing with customs, traditions, facts and figures, and current issues of the Hispanic world.

5) Short compositions in the present tense.

6) Multi-Media assignments for cultural enrichment and language reinforcement, and/or lab sessions.
